The
Anglican Church in Uganda is an enormous mission field in and of itself as
many in the church do not have a personal relationship with Christ. In
recent years, evangelical Christians in Uganda have began independent
churches of their own in response. Still, the majority of Ugandans remain in
Anglican Church. As such, Hesed Ministries’ primary goal is to reach those
in the church through evangelistic outreach and discipleship, parish by
parish. Outreach is also conducted among the un-churched and those who are
followers of other religions.
Establishing
prayer cells throughout the region is the next step in Hesed’s strategy to
reach Busoga for Christ. New believers and mature believers are encouraged
to join together to pray for one another, their communities’ needs, as
well as the needs of their local churches. Hesed works with believers to
establish consistent, regular prayer ministry within the churches. The
ministry’s annual prayer conference at the beginning of each year is
becoming increasingly popular, attracting over 1,000 people this past
year.
By using Proverbs 31, Florence began NOWI (Noble Women of Impact) with a
small group of women whom she discipled and eventually sent out to
disciple other women. Since that time, NOWI has grown to become an
independent organization, with Florence serving on its board as a lifetime
advisor. Through NOWI’s small loans program, women are able to contribute
to and increase their families’ incomes through small business ventures.
Women have begun successful small businesses, have paid tuition and other
school fees for their children and have built permanent homes for their
families. NOWI women are reaching their husbands, their children.
To
help communities begin to identify the things that they can do to improve
their material well-being, Hesed ministries invites saved Christian women
to come together and start a local NOWI chapter. The NOWI groups serve
as a place where women can come to encourage and strengthen one another
as sisters in Christ. Once a Hesed ran ministry, NOWI has grown to become
an independent organization in which Florence, the organization’s
founder, serves as a lifetime consultant. Through NOWI’s small loans
program, Hesed helps women to improve the livelihoods of their families
and community. NOWI has changed lives by enabling women to contribute
to their family income; women have been able to successful engage in small
business, have paid tuition and other school fees for their children and
have built permanent homes for their families.

Approximately 50% of Uganda’s population is below 15 years of
age, yet there are very few church ministries specifically targeted
towards this age group. An effective ministry would begin with regular,
children-oriented Sunday school in all the churches, something that
currently does not exist. As a start, Hesed Ministries identifies Sunday
school teachers and provides training to help equip them to reach children
for Christ.
In his call to ministry, Michael was given a burden for trained
leadership in the Church in Africa.
The need for trained leadership is evidenced in the Anglican Church by the
large number of ordained priests and church leaders who do not have formal
Bible or church leadership training. Additionally, there are many who
serve in the Anglican Church that are not born again. These, plus numerous
logistical challenges, make theological training in Busoga Diocese
complicated indeed. Michael, a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary,
conducts seminars and workshops for priests in the Anglican Church and the
leadership of the numerous non-denominational, independent churches that
are slowly increasing in the region.
The Hesed Outreach Team, or, as it is known locally, HOT, travels
with the evangelistic outreach team, telling the story of salvation and
life in Christ through cultural music, theatre and dance. The group’s
talent and entertaining ability draws crowds and has been a very effective
tool in spreading the Gospel.
